The short version

Aera was designed for the rooms you forget to take care of — the hallway you pass through twice a day, the bathroom that only smells clean for an hour after you clean it, the entryway that greets you before you have taken your coat off. There is no flame to blow out, no plug to find, no app to open. You set it down once, and it keeps working quietly for the next three or four months.

The scent is built in three layers rather than one flat note. It opens on bergamot peel and a cool green tea accord — clean, slightly bitter, never sweet. The middle is soft white tea and dry orris, which is what keeps the blend from reading as perfume. The base is the part that lingers: aged cedarwood, a trace of amber, and pale musk that settles into fabric and wood over a few days.

The vessel matters as much as the liquid inside it. Each bottle is pressed from frosted soda-lime glass in a soft sand tone that diffuses light instead of reflecting it, so the amber oil inside reads as a warm shadow rather than a coloured liquid. The neck is narrow enough to hold the six rattan reeds in a loose fan, and wide enough that flipping them once a week takes five seconds and no mess.

Every batch is blended and filled by hand in small runs, then rested for seven days before shipping so the fragrance fully binds with the base oil. That resting step is why Aera smells the same on day one as it does in week ten — most diffusers smell strong for two weeks and then quietly disappear.

Care & use

• Uncap and insert all six reeds. Flip them after one hour to start the capillary flow.
• Flip once a week to refresh the throw; wash hands after handling reeds.
• Keep away from direct sunlight and radiators — heat thins the oil and shortens its life.
• Place on a coaster or tray on untreated wood or polished stone surfaces.
